How does solar technology work?
Solar energy converts light from the sun into electricity. This electricity can then be used in your home or fed into the grid when it is not needed. This is done by installing solar panels on your roof that generate direct current (DC) electricity. This is then fed into a solar inverter that converts the DC power from your solar panels into AC power, which can then be used to power everything in your home.
1. Earning credits for delivering solar power to the grid
Unused solar power is then fed back into the grid. You receive a credit on your electricity bill called the feed-in tariff (FiT) for providing solar energy back into the grid. Your electricity bill then takes into account the electricity you draw from the grid and credits for the electricity generated by the solar power system that you don't use.
2. Transforming DC output into alternating current
The inverter converts the direct current into alternating current (AC) that can be used in your home. From here, the AC is routed to your control panel.
3. Сonverting the absorbed solar energy into electricity
Your solar modules are made of photovoltaic silicon cells (PV cells). When sunlight hits your solar panels, the PV cells absorb the sun's rays and generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The electricity generated by the solar panels is called direct current (DC) and is not suitable for use in your home by your appliances. Instead, the DC electricity is sent to your central inverter (or micro-inverter, depending on the design of your system).
4. Estimating the amount of electricity taken from the utility
All homes with solar must have a bi-directional meter, which your electricity retailer will install for you. A bi-directional meter can record all the electricity that is supplied to the home but also the amount of solar energy that is fed back into the grid. This is referred to as net metering.

A control panel allows the usable AC power to be routed to the appliances in your home. Your panel ensures that solar energy is always used to power your home first and that additional energy is called from the grid only when solar power production is insufficient.

You also don't have to switch between solar power and grid power, as your solar system can determine when it's best to do so based on the energy used in your home.
